Good time to dig up Lily for propagation

Lily of the Nile
Ready to split for transplanting
Overgrown Dietes African Lily
From one plant to 5 plants

After a few days of rain to loosen up  the soil, with a sunny break and warm sunshine in between, we would use this opportunity  to dig up some overgrown plants  like lily of the Niles and Dietes that are good shelters for snails and slugs and split them into many smaller plants. We transplant them into pots to give away to friends and neighbors or use them to fill up empty spaces in the yard for spring and summer time blooms.

These two types of plants are so tough and tolerant to rough handling and constant splitting that we thought they will never die. Nothing seem to kill them except purposely stop watering them at all. They can be full of snails and still survive. They are one of the most hardy plants that give lovely flowers in spring and summer that will really last the entire season with blooms. They are drought tolerant and needs almost no care at all. That is why they are commonly found in public places, apartment buildings and parking lots in California.

Just buy a few of them and you will end up covering your entire property with them year after year !  They also spread easily with seed droppings after each season's bloom. They really grow like weeds but have pretty flowers.
