Beautiful Clyclamen Flowers

Now is the time to display the beautiful Cyclamens.

Cyclamens came from the Mediterranean areas, Western Europe, Iran and Somalia. It is a very hardy plant sometimes it seems it never dies. They whiter into nothing, leaving a round tuber but always come back to life. The leaves grow back in Autumn through Winter and die in late Spring. The plants goes dormant through the dry Mediterranean summer. Over this period from Autumn to Summer, the Cyclarmens produce the most beautiful flowers and mild fragrance.

The Cyclamens are easy to take care of - all one needs is to keep them watered and moist daily. The Cyclamens have a tuber from which the flowers and roots grow. The root ball is like a potato from which the roots can come out every  directions.

  • Cyclamen persicum and Cyclamen coum grows root from the bottom.
  • Cyclamen hederifolium grows root from the top and sides.
  • Cyclmen graecum grows root from the bottom.

Leaves and flowers sprout from the top of the tuber. Flowers can be pink, white or dark red. Best show of display is to border the edges along the front of the house for an attractive curb appeal. An easy way to handle them is to plant them in pots like below. This way you can store them during their summer hibernation period and keep them away from the heat of the summer drought.

All together, there are about 23 species of Cyclamens and they are all very beautiful and easy to take care of.  The species most commonly found in florist or nurseries are Cyclamen persicum and repandum.

From my experience, I like to plant them in a flower pot because I can place them any where I like. When they grow dormant, I can just empty the pot and let the root ball dry and store them until the next Winter.
